No Surrender on BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour
29th November 2022
Radio 4
Listen to Emma Barnett talking to Scarlett and Sophie Rickard about their 2022 graphic novel adaptation of No Surrender (at about 49 mins) on 29th November 2022.
Active suffragette and newspaper columnist Constance Maud wrote her novel No Surrender as a recruitment tool for her glorious cause: votes for women. Published in 1911, it recounts the arguments for and against universal suffrage, and the tactics used by the suffragettes to force change, as well as a moving account of the shameful force-feeding policy.
Scarlett and Sophie talk to Emma about why these issues are relevant to modern ethics of protest and civil disobedience, about how they put so many individual women into one book, how they go about turning a prose book into narrative art, and the interaction between fact and fiction.
