Scarlett and Sophie Rickard are graphic novelists. Collaborating on every stage of a project, Sophie makes up the stories and Scarlett draws the pictures. This has been going on since they were children, when Scarlett’s constant refrain was “Tell me what to draw!”

The sisters grew up in the Ribble Valley in Lancashire, and the culture and landscape of the north-west feature prominently in their first novel Mann’s Best Friend.

Their graphic novel adaptation of Robert Tressell’s working-class classic The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists has been well loved in Britain, America and Canada. It was published by SelfMadeHero in 2020 and in 2022 it was nominated for an Eisner award in the category best adaptation from another medium.

They are currently working on a graphic novel adaptation of Constance Maud’s suffrage classic No Surrender, to be published by SelfMadeHero in winter 2022. The book will be a perfect shelf-mate for The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists – set in the same era, but this time examining the questions of equal rights and the ethics of civil disobedience.

Scarlett is an illustrator and graphic artist living in Kent. Sophie is a writer and living in Cheshire. They are both collie owners. Despite living hundreds of miles apart they work closely on every stage of their projects — and have a lot of fun doing it.
